Parenthood is an exciting, confusing, rewarding, infuriating, isolating, and community-building experience. Through writing about my experiences and reactions to parenting-related articles, I aim to foster a sense of inquiry and inclusion rather than to promote any sort of ideal or philosophy. After all, most of us are just flying by the seat of our pants, doing what works and what feels right.

Breastfeeding in Real Life

Maybe part of the problem with breastfeeding is that it is presented as rainbows and unicorns.  We don't generally see photos of breastfeeding mothers who are juggling two other kids or wiping running noses or eating their breakfast at the same time, teetering a spoonful of cereal from a distance likely to spill on a babe's head.  Pictures of moms lying down while breastfeeding because they are so tired (which is one of the aspects about it that benefited me most, personally).  Pictures of moms making funny faces with their kids.  This is the kind of thing that is going to normalize breastfeeding, not pictures of moms "breastfeeding on mountaintops" as "This is Breastfeeding in Real Life" complains.  Not that there's anything wrong with that, and it's often a lovely momento for a mother to have later in life.  But most of the time, it's just another way of feeding a kid, just like crackers and bottles.

Check out this lovely gallery.

And don't skip the video.  Or do.  In any case, here's a paraphrase of my favorite quote from the video:

"Usually when we see pictures of breastfeeding, it looks perfect.  But it's not perfect.  Real life is not perfect.  But just because it's not perfect doesn't mean it can't be beautiful."

Can I get a "Amen"?!
